Frequently Asked Questions

When can I register?
The Conservatory operates two 17-week semesters for private instruction, Music Adventures, and Suzuki; two 15-week semesters for classes and ensembles; and an 8-week summer program. Students may register for private lessons in any instrument or voice at any time during the year and pay the prorated cost of the remaining lessons in the semester. See the calendar for fall and spring semester pre-registration and registration dates.

How do I register?
If this is your first time enrolling yourself or your child, register in person. Previously enrolled students may register in person or by phone by calling 718-622-3300 in Brooklyn or 718-461-8910 in Queens.

Can I try before I buy?
Yes. If you or your child plan(s) to register for private lessons for the first time, you may pay for an individual lesson with no obligation to register for more classes. Prospective students also may audit one group class per semester. Trial lessons may be rescheduled once with 24 hours' notice. In order to receive a refund, trial lessons must be cancelled with 24 hours' notice.

How do I pay for my classes?
Pay by phone with an American Express, MasterCard, or Visa, or in person by check, money order, or credit card. Payment for classes that cost less than $300 must be made in full at the time of registration. For classes that cost over $300, you may use the installment plan, on which you may make three equal payments. The first payment, due at registration, includes one-third tuition plus registration and installment fees; the second and third payments are due during the fourth and eighth weeks of the term. Students signing up for the entire year pay twice the tuition or class fee shown.

What other fees must I pay?
The following are nonrefundable fees, which are added to lesson and class prices:
Registration fee: $25 paid once a year.
Installment fee: $30 each semester that the installment fee is selected.
Returned check: $30.

What happens if my account is not current or my check is returned?
If your account is not current, you may not take further lessons or classes until outstanding balances are paid. If your check is returned for insufficient funds, subsequent payment can be made only by money order or certified check.

How do I apply for financial aid?
You may ask the registration staff for a scholarship application form. Scholarship forms are due at least four weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.

What discounts can I get?
Family Discount. Receive 5% off per additional family member on private instruction, Music Adventures, or Music Therapy, and pay only one processing and installment fee if the first family member is enrolled in any of these programs.

Multiple Lesson Discount. Students who register for more than one set of private lessons receive 5% off tuition. This discount does not apply to group classes which are already discounted to students studying privately at the Conservatory.

Senior Discount. Senior citizens 65 or older with valid identification receive 15% off tuition for private lessons.

Off-Peak Discount. Students who register for private lessons that begin before 2 p.m. on weekdays receive 20% off tuition. This may not be combined with any other discount.
